Thanks, Sarkie. I'm no PA expert by any means, though. Just fortunate to live in the same city and have access to the ambiance surrounding all his activities. It's hard not to take an interest in a guy so civically and philanthropically involved.

I don't have any profound explanation for today's events - I think others on the thread have offered far better explanations than I ever could. I'm in a number of PA companies, some having a good day and some not, so I don't see a widespread Wired World demise, but I will offer that I am pretty unfazed by today's GNET price action. A little patience is in order here, I think.

If you look at the latest PA Wired World Master List (which I haven't posted yet <g>) you can get some perspective on the magnitude of the CHTR investment in comparison to other holdings. Depending on the source, PA's investment in cable infrastructure is between 12 and 15 billion dollars. His next largest investment is in RCN at 1.65 B, and the rest are under a billion. So it makes sense that everything is revolving around the Charter IPO. A bit of a holding pattern, but notice we've been somewhat insulated from sector down days, as well. Just lots of jockeying for position in anticipation of the big event, IMO. And I mean BIG event.

WRT the earlier suggestion that PA might be posturing to buy GNET at a discount, I just can't see it. My best response is this earlier post:

I work for a small, family-owned company run by two brothers . . . who attended Lakeside, many years ago. It has always been amazing to me (and I didn't make the connection until recently) how they still socialize almost exclusively with their high school friends (and they are in their 70's). This is a VERY tight group.

Now consider that Russell Horowitz [and Paul Allen] also attended Lakeside. I suspect that most of us can extrapolate from our own (unexclusive) high school experiences that, in a business situation, we would give fellow alumni the first break (now multiply that by about 10, considering it is Lakeside). Maybe I'm dreaming, but I take a little comfort thinking that PA won't do anything AOLish to screw Russell over.

This has been long-winded, I know, but my point is that I think these Lakeside ties are close to "blood ties" and may go a long way toward explaining certain aspects of the Wired World strategy.

Not to get too "rah-rah" here, but PA and the VV team are pretty sharp and I think their plan is well defined and very forward-looking. What we're seeing now is just the calm before the broadband storm. Might be a little while yet, but worth the wait, IMO.

For those interested, here's a recent article on PA's civic activities. (He'll get this done, but like so many other things, he was initially a bit ahead of his time.)

Paul Allen's Vulcan Northwest has purchased another waterfront property as it expands its holdings around South Lake Union. The move has fueled speculation the Microsoft co-founder has big plans for the area that could include development of a major park.

After voters turned down the Seattle Commons idea in 1996 - nixing a $167 million plan to create a 42-acre park and mixed-use neighborhood - Allen got back about 11 acres of property in the South Lake Union area that was purchased with a $20 million loan he had given to the project. If a tax levy had passed to support the Seattle Commons, Allen would have forgiven the debt and made it a gift.
