Thanks for the response. I'm heartened to learn that my secondary education wasn't as compromised as I had feared, but what I was taught about perspective theory and the renaissance was incomplete for the reasons you give. Does the Italian government usually reserve the traditional summer vacation period for disruptive, mammoth roadwork projects? Here in Chicago, road construction knows no seasonal bounds--in fact early this year the most disruptive construction project imaginable took place during the coldest time of winter. P.S. I loved Courmeyeur and Lugano (in additon to Florence, San Gamignano, Venice, Burano, etc.).
