I believe there were even more ambitious plans announced
much earlier to industry analysts:

a long time: Merced, the first implementation of the Intel/HP
architecture collaboration called IA-64."

The first silicon was made in the middle of 1999.
Therefore I insist that the MerDUD is TWO YEARS LATE.
Period.
