Unigraphics Solutions and Intel Demonstrate IA-64 Itanium(TM) Technology at Unigraphics User Group Conference

UG Conference Selected as Site for the First Demonstration of Itanium(TM) Workstation Platform

ST. LOUIS, Oct. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Unigraphics Solutions Inc. (NYSE: UGS - news), a leading developer of CAD/CAM/CAE and PDM software, and Intel Corporation today performed a public demonstration of Intel's Intel® Architecture 64 (IA-64) technology in a workstation platform at the Unigraphics User Group Conference in Dearborn, Mich. John Mazzola, president and CEO of Unigraphics Solutions, shared the stage with Anand Chandrasekhar, General Manager of Intel's Workstation Product Group, in a demonstration of an Itanium(TM) processor-based workstation platform. In addition to the demonstration, Intel disclosed its IA-64 roadmap and discussed how it is working closely with Unigraphics Solutions to ensure the availability of UGS software when OEMs deliver Itanium processor-based workstations in the second half of 2000.

The Itanium(TM) processor -- Intel's first member of the IA-64 architecture family -- will provide the Unigraphics high-end CAD/CAM/CAE application with the power necessary to achieve new levels of performance. UGS' commitment to IA-64, combined with its previously announced support of symmetric multi-processing (SMP), will offer its customers unprecedented productivity in the demanding product development environment. Unigraphics is a premier mechanical design and manufacturing software applications used by some of the world's most respected manufacturing companies including General Motors, Boeing, 3M, Kodak and General Electric.

''Our enterprise customers continue to push the envelope of hardware performance with large complex designs,'' says UGS' Mazzola. ''Product development requirements continue to outpace technology yet our customers' interest in Intel-based solutions is greater than ever. This demonstration of Itanium(TM) offers a view of the next generation of processor performance that will help companies meet their design and manufacturing goals for years to come. Itanium(TM) now offers even our most demanding customers a migration path to Intel® Architecture. Unigraphics Solutions is committed to delivering all of it's products, including iMAN and Solid Edge, on IA-64.''

Intel's Anand Chandrasekhar -- a keynote speaker at the conference -- highlighted Intel's technology and UGS' commitment to IA-64. ''Our relationship with Unigraphics Solutions has been very productive,'' says Chandrasekhar. ''Unigraphics has been performance optimized in Intel's Application Solution Center and its solid modeling kernel, Parasolid, has been threaded for SMP. We are very pleased with UGS' commitment to IA-64 and we are delighted to work together to demonstrate Itanium(TM) at this user conference. We look forward to our continued efforts with Unigraphics Solutions to ensure that its products run best on Intel Architecture-based workstations.''

Unigraphics Solutions was one of the first major CAD/CAM/CAE vendors to migrate its products to Windows NT running on the Intel Architecture when it announced support in 1995. Today, Unigraphics on the Windows NT and IA platform is being adopted by UGS customers worldwide and in 1998 accounted for about 60 percent of new business. Recently, General Motors announced plans to begin the deployment of Unigraphics and iMAN on Windows NT running on Intel Architecture workstations as part of GM's Fast Vehicle Product Development Program. These upgrades to GM's worldwide infrastructure will enable concurrent design between GM development centers and supplier centers on six continents.

Ten - <So, what happened while I was gone, besides the AMD earnings (losses) announcement?>

1) News was dog slow on the Intel Coppermine presentation. I was going nuts :-).

2) A lot of back and forth on what it all means on the AMD thread. Looking forward to your report and your analysis.

Thanks for confirming the spec scores to kash at lunch. I couldn't comment on them without knowing if they were presented.
