I believe that he was very disappointed in Bush. But Reagan did give the most effective speech at the 1992 convention, even the whole 1992 campaign. In fact, the only time that Bush was ahead of Clinton in the polls post Dem-convention was directly after Reagan's speech.

To this day chowderhead Buchanan claim's credit for the bounce Bush got in the polls - incredible! I remember enduring Buchanan as he pushed Reagan to the edge of prime time. It was only when the media focused on Buchanan's call to tribalism and Bush's own rhetorical shortcomings that the tide once again ebbed.

Reagan's speech was so effective that the NYTimes devoted an above-the-fold front page article to attacking it, mostly for ascribing certain quotes to Lincoln. Reagan certainly wasn't the first to do so and the wisdom they contained was undeniable.

I'm glad I have a tape of it.
