Thursday 26 Jamadi-us-Saani 1420 'Ancient coins being smuggled out'

By Our Correspondent

MARDAN, Oct 6: Professor Shah Naszar of the department of Sir Sahibzada Abdul
Qayyum Khan Museum of archaeology and ethnology, University of Peshawar, has
expressed concern over the smuggling of ancient coins from the land of Gandhara.

Ancient soil of Pakistan ----Call it INDIA, my friend
Talking to Dawn here, Mr Naszar said that from the ancient soil of Pakistan, a lot of
coins had been recovered during the course of official excavations.

"Besides these accidental discoveries, unfortunately a number of unskilled and
unauthorized people recovered a lot of master pieces of coins which were smuggled
out mostly to European countries.
SRI Haripure --Does it sound Islamic
"In Pakistan, the most accidental discovery is that of Sri Salih (Haripure) Hoard, which
is situated in a village known as Manak Rai near the Daur River," he said.

The discovery, he said, had been made on Feb 3, 1993, in which large number of coins
had been recovered, "but eight of them were very important and rare coins. These
coins were purchased and published by Amanur Rehman of Islamabad and Dr Usman
Beoparachi of C.N.Rs in a book, "Pre-Kushana Coins", Islamabad, 1995."

He said that a number of art seekers in the country, particularly, in the NWFP, who
were equipped with metalled detector and other latest facilities, ruined and plundered
the historically important sites. "These seekers are also collecting coins from local
people, who have now adopted illegal excavation as a profession," he alleged.

He said an excavation site, situated at a terrain of mountains in Baboza, Mardan, was
completely ruined by the smugglers, who mostly used dynamites for excavation.

Since 1996, the white Huns coins and the coins of Hindu Shahi had made their way to
local markets from the site, "which are priceless and valuable," he said, adding that
recently huge quantity of the coins had been ceased by

Go back and read my statement again. The BJP saffron-khakhi gang has managed to get just about 180 seats. It is the 23 or so allies that have got the remaining 110-115 seats.

What's next? A few days of euphoria followed by a few weeks of bickering followed by a few months of confusion followed by elections!

Chauthala flexes his muscles about the steep hike in diesel prices :

"I am not making any threats, but I have requested the government to withdraw the increase. This is
anti-poor and anti-farmer," said Om Prakash Chautala of the National Lok Dal.

How many seats does this guy have? The allies of the BJP account for a whopping 40% of the total number of seats of the alliance. The DMK-MDMK-PMK combo alone can put the BJP in deep doo-doo, not to mention the TDP by itself or two or more of the trio of Janata Dal (U), Trinamul Party and the Biju Janata Dal working in tandem...

Boy, this is gonna be one heck of a "stable" government! ;-)
