The name of the game in this industry is increased market-share. And once you have huge amounts of market share, all you can do is try to convert customers from the competition.

Obviously there is the small business market, but most existing large businesses are already fully computerized shops running NetWare, WindowsNT, or UNIX as servers, and then a slew of other systems.

For Microsoft to "convert" any of these accounts to WindowsNT they must offer extremely easy and "smooth" migration tools from *any* version of the products. Most of these tools must co-exist with existing systems, allowing a timed/scheduled transition to the new products.

So I'm sure that Microsoft is trying to ensure compatibility with *all* versions of NetWare ... just as Novell is trying to migrate *all* version of WindowsNT users to NDS ... ;-)
