Dear TTF:

There is a BIG difference between an OLTP database, and a Data Warehouse. OLTP is designed for READ and WRITE. Data Warehouses or OLAP databases are designed mostly for READ. Which means different tuning, and different Data schemas. THERE is definitely going to be an INPUT from MSTR in how they would like the DATA SCHEMA of the DATA WAREHOUSE to be like. Of course, they are going to TUNE the DATA Warehouse for faster query execution.

But, seriously, the VALUE PROP in what MSTR delivers is what they DO FOR THE BUSINESS. Does an insurance company need to know in an instant which one of the claims is FRAUDULENT? DEFINITELY NOT. SO what is the point in delivering this. But, then again if there is SQL and a database engine that can do this, it is TRIVIAL for MSTR to deliver on this.

Let me tell you that it is NOT TRIVIAL to create a SQL QUERY GENERATION engine. ESPECIALLY a good one. Do you really think that people are going to build this IN-HOUSE? I don't think so.

Then again, let US not get stuck in the just the query performance, and query building. There is MORE to MSTR than this. You should look at their e-commerce platforms, their Personal Intelligence network. Is there anyone else offering such services? NO. Are they first to the market? YES. Have they signed up partners for this? YES. Did they sign this HUGE $52.5 Million deal with NCR, arguably the most scalable database (TERADATA) to deliver this? YES.

You mentioned faster query performance through MDDB databases. You might want to check this excerpt from their press release.

"As part of the agreement, MicroStrategy will provide NCR?s future OLAP technology. MicroStrategy has agreed to purchase NCR?s TeraCube? business and all related intellectual property in exchange for $14 million in MicroStrategy stock. NCR and MicroStrategy will offer the industry?s most capable business intelligence platform for Teradata Warehouses by leveraging the strengths of both companies? OLAP technology. MicroStrategy will develop TeraCube 2.0, built on MicroStrategy?s Intelligent E-Business Platform and optimized for NCR?s Teradata database, to handle the high scalability and analytical requirements of NCR?s customer base."

TTF: Looks like MSTR read your mind, and delivered on what you think (correctly) is a need.

Thanks
