Attention Business Editors:

IDS creates virtual exploration and mining community with launch of Geo-Portal

Selects Sun - Netscape Alliance Software to Deliver Personalized
e-Commerce, Content

TORONTO, Oct. 14 /CNW/ - The $300 billion (CDN) international exploration
and mining industry will soon be part of an integrated online community.
Intelligent Detection Systems (IDS) (TSE:ISD), a Canadian developer of
sophisticated detection devices announced today that it is working with the
Sun - Netscape Alliance to develop Geo-Portal, an online e-commerce centre for
mining, geophysics and exploration professionals around the world.
Through two gateways, GeophysicsOnline.com and MineOnline.com, IDS will
bring together consultants, equipment, instrument manufacturers and service
providers in one common trading, research and information post. The portals
will also feature full-service e-commerce capabilities, specifically designed
to meet the business-to-business and trading needs of the geophysics and
mining industries.
Dr. Mariusz Rybak, chairman and CEO, IDS, believes that a virtual
marketplace is the most effective way to meet the needs of this
highly-fragmented worldwide industry: ``This sector is made up of people with
a high degree of technical literacy,' says Rybak. ``As a group, they are
extensive users of computer and telecom technology but they currently lack a
centralized business and communication resource.
``We have over 50 years experience in this sector,' he says. ``And now,
with the launch of Geo-Portal, we aim to be the number one source for products
and services that include equipment, instrumentation, survey data and analysis
for this market and we are excited to work with the Sun - Netscape Alliance to
deliver our vision.'
The Geo-Portal infrastructure uses the Sun - Netscape Alliance iPlanet
e-commerce application software to enable users to customize their desktops
and deliver personalized e-commerce and content to users around the world.
Features include personalized business news updates, industry-specific
content, stock quotes, reference data, weather, sports as well as a gateway to
the online Geo-Portal marketplace.
``With Geo-Portal, IDS is offering a much-needed portal to the global
exploration, oil and gas and mining industries, enabling members to
communicate and conduct business online,' says Todd Finch, President, Sun -
Netscape Alliance Canada. ``We are happy to work with the leaders in this
space to provide personalized e-commerce tools to the exploration community.'
Geo-Portal will be comprised of two portals initially:
GeophysicsOnline.com to serve the mining and oil and gas exploration
industries and MineOnline.com for the mining production sector. Other portals
aimed at the oil and gas production sector are planned.
IDS is a dynamic developer, manufacturer and marketer of sophisticated
detection devices and systems. The company operates through seven business
units: Analytical & Security products and solutions, IDS Power Control
Systems, Scintrex Earth Science Instrumentation, Survey & Exploration
Technology Services, IEC (Integration, Engineering and Consulting), ChemiCorp
International and Caduceon Inc. Its more than 70 products range from drug and
explosive detectors to nuclear safety control instruments, oil and gas
exploration and developing technologies for industrial process control and
point-of-care health analysis.
