I've always wondered about the effectiveness of banner ads. I have responded to them from time to time, but pretty much ignore them. Although I also mute out commercials on tv much of the time. My guess is that for brand recognition purposes, the banner ads are effective to some extent. The backlash effect to them that is often stated is probably negligible, as I remember from some old communication text that Adverts are effective even when one resents them being presented (with some obvious qualifiers). I guess that's why you continue to see some of the dumbest TV ads over and over again.
