Betty and Thread,

"a critically important milestone"

Eli Harari, president and CEO of SanDisk, said...

This strategic cooperation between the two pioneers of flash storage represents for SanDisk a critically important milestone as we prepare to meet the major market growth opportunities projected for flash storage in the years ahead. Gigabit scale flash memory development is costly and technologically challenging.

The start-up costs for Dominion and the increased R&D spending will likely have an impact on near-term performance of SNDK since we are just a small Panda Cub and this type of long-term investment will consume a significant portion of operating cash.

It would appear that the secondary was needed to buy the wafer manufacturing equipment at Dominion. This represents a departure from the fabless model that SanDisk has followed to date.

EVERYONE SHOULD READ THE PRESS RELEASE VERY CAREFULLY.

Elizabeth, you're absolutely right, but never underestimate what real marketing muscle can do. The latest information that I've seen on digital camera sales shows that Sony is among the top, even though its cameras use either a low capacity flash card or a floppy disk.
