FY00 EPS reduced to 0.38;$850M breakeven is 28% seq increase,8% fr yr-ago:Impossible
nothing to get too excited about considering that the company
had actually earned a profit of $0.01 per share in the yr-ago period.
Moreover, revenues slipped about 3% to $662 mln. For some perspective,
CEO Jerry Sanders estimated that AMD must reach $850 mln in revenues in
the fourth quarter to get to a break-even point. That would be a 28%
sequential increase and about an 8% jump from yr-ago levels. Unfortunately, it
is difficult to put much faith in AMD reaching that revenue target since the
Taiwan earthquake has interrupted its supply chain; and let's not forget a
certain company called Intel whose competitive presence has been more than
a stumbling point for AMD in the past. Looking to its future, and in an effort to
raise more cash, AMD also announced that it had hired investment bankers at
DLJ and Salomon Smith Barney to find buyers for its communications product
group. The company said it hopes a sale can be completed during the first half
of 2000. Perhaps by then the company will also be able to turn a profit, but
uncertainty surrounding competiton from Intel, the success of its Athlon chip,
and production capabilities leave plenty of room for doubt. Consensus
expectations for FY00 are for the company to turn a profit of $0.38 per
share, but that's down from $0.62 just 90 days ago.
