Ramsey Su: So Greenspan has the option to "surprise" the market before the next FOMC meeting?

That is a heck of an observation. If so, that begs the question, would a surprise increase generate a similar but opposite move as last year's surprise decrease? And, what economic report would trigger (be the excuse) the decision?

Regards,
LG

That's one of the rumors I've seen in the news. That the Fed could raise rates if the unemployment or the employment cost data is too strong. Also that any weakness in tomorrow's data may be discounted as distorted by Hurricane Floyd --- so that it's almost a no-win report.

Ramsey,

The FED does not have to wait for the next official meeting.
They can hold a conference call between the various
governors at any time.

This has happened on a number of occasions in the past.
