To QCharts/QFeed users: Below is a bulletin from UUNET - one of largest Internet backbone providers - in regards an outage earlier today that may have affected your QCharts/QFeed service reliability. >>> On Thursday, October 7, 1999, between 4:20am and 9:30am EDT, UUNET experienced routing instability throughout the North American backbone which may have intermittently affected connectivity to servers located in the Tysons Corner, VA and San Jose, CA UUHost Data Centers. During this period, traffic throughout the UUNET backbone had to be re-routed, which may have resulted in a a [sic] series of brief periods of time during which users may have been unable to access your site. This inability varied throughout North America. UUNET's redundant network is such that these instances are a rare occurance [sic], though routing problems do occur from time to time. We apologize for any inconvenience to you as a result of this network anomoly [sic]. <<< This may have had an effect on general internet connectivity, and was probably related to QCharts/QFeed slowdowns this morning experienced by 10-25% of our customers today between 8:50-9:30 am EST because UUNET carries so much ISP traffic. Our QFeed Server Network employs a variety of major backbone providers to carry our traffic so that our service can continue when there are outages such as this. Even so, disruptions can cause slowdowns as our customers re-connect to new servers when connections are broken. You too can take steps prepare for outages such as this by having backup a backup ISP that uses a different backbone provider from your primary ISP. If the primary goes down, chances are you will still be able to get a connection using your backup provider. As a trader, minimizing risk is the key to success. One of those risks is communications risk, and like portfolio risk, diversification can reduce your risk exposure. Regards, -- Gibbons Burke
