The big question mark is whether the liberals in the BJP will be able to free the party from the shackles of the right-wing religious fruitcakes of the RSS, VHP et.

Political realism and change of heart and mind to good will towards all Indians has already dawned on BJP, RSS, VHP. Alliances with disparate elements are proof enough.
Take US for instance. If it was left to people, no civil rights would have been given to blacks. It took a Lyndon Johnson, a Kennedy and many people of goodwill in all races in America to bring about a change of heart and mind among whites. Effective legislation went a long way to assure equal treatment. Equal treatment is still not a complete reality in terms of housing, education, freedom of movement, & association etc. Racial profiling is not uncommon. So the changes will come to India, whether BJP, RSS or VHP like them or not. It takes time and patience.
