David,

Just a word of warning: it is absolutely impossible to predict what a stock is going to do in relation to its earnings report. You are right that a stock often runs up in advance of earnings. I have found that buying a week or so in advance and selling about two days before earnings works well. I have been completely burned several times by holding through earnings, even when they were GREAT! I just got burned this week on one where expectation was $0.32 and it came in at $0.44. The stock dropped from 24 to 15 in two days!

If a stock doesn't begin a run up by a week before earnings, I would drop it. My guess is that no matter what they announce, it is headed down for some reason.
