It's going to be clock speed, not performance per clock that does it. The K6-3 was a better chip clock for clock than the Pentium III for business applications - and was unable to compete due to its lower clock.

If the performance is roughly similar clock for clock this will be a pure "megahertz sells" outcome for whichever company can stay ahead.
