Thought you might find this article interesting.

zdnet.com

It states that:

Cable modem sales have so far outpaced DSL sales in the U.S. But that is rapidly changing. New advances in technology and availability are pushing DSL ahead. Dataquest predicts DSL sales will top 1 million units this year and will shoot up to 9.8 million by 2003, compared to the projected 5.3 million cable modem sales that year.

I ordered DSL service and should have it up and running next week. Can't wait!

Is it capable of supporting video at real time speed?

I've heard that US West is doing a trial of video on demand using a DSL variant in Phoenix.

Here's an announcement that mentions it:
cnnfn.com

edit: I found a good summary of the system:
cabledatacomnews.com

Deploying VDSL requires a telephone company to extend fiber-optic lines deep into their network so the remaining copper loop length is less than 4,000 feet. A universal service access multiplexer (USAM) is installed at the fiber termination point, next to the existing telephone service cabinet. The USAM is able to transmit a dedicated digital data stream of more than 25 Mbps over an existing copper phone line to a gateway device in the home, enough capacity to deliver several high-quality MPEG video channels and high-speed Internet access...

The basic Choice TV package includes 77 broadcast and cable channels, 25 pay-per-view movie channels and 40 digital music channels. US WEST offers Gemstar International's GUIDE Plus+ interactive program guide (IPG) with the service

US WEST is now offering VDSL service to less than 50,000 homes in six Phoenix franchise areas. To date, the company has attracted more than 5,000 Choice TV subscribers, almost exclusively through door-to-door sales.

Here's a general look at the issue that doesn't mention the USW trial:

>>Is it capable of supporting video at real time speed? For instance, can one watch a movie with no noticable difference from VCR or DVD by downloading it using DSL? <<

Sorry, not there yet. But it can do little web window video pretty well.
