Asia is struggling to cope with some of the highest oil prices in more than 30 months, fearing a backlash of social unrest and loss of faith among the electorate.

In 1998, the region largely missed out on the lowest average oil prices in decades because the currency collapse meant import prices stayed high. Now, with many currencies withering and oil prices strong, most Asian countries are still held over a barrel.

``This is a no win situation from the point of view of anyone who is consuming products,' said James Brown, regional energy analyst for Merrill Lynch.
