Justa. I wasn't arguing the point. It strikes me that it might be pretty easy to "qualify" more workers by just giving some that are already here Green Cards. In the past, the country has used immigration to bring in more workers to fill the unskilled positions. It might be time for this to happen again unless the Unions still control things. Also, those higher paid Mom n Pop workers will be "getting paid" less for every item bought at WalMart. You can probably double or triple the salary of a WalMart checker and pay for it with the savings from not having to pay for all the Mom n Pop stores that go out of business.

At my end of the spectrum, consider the H1B Visa debate. Does IBM want to hire me at 42 where I might want to go home after working an 8 hour day (IF I were to go back to that sort of job) or would they prefer a young, 20 something, foreign born that thinks "having a life" is something you do when you retire? I see the debate spreading to the lower paid workforce in tight labor markets.

Short term....it IS a problem that wages will have to go up to get people or new technology will have to make checkers more efficient.
