There are only three companies who have robust, proven implementations of Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) software - a non-negotiable requirement for any router to be deployed into a public internet. These companies are: Cisco (which invented it), Nortel (which copied it after years of development) and Juniper (which hired the engineers who invented it away from Cisco). Because all new routers must be completely compatible with the existing Cisco routers (85% of all internet routers) and because Cisco BGP is a notoriously complicated and ideosyncratic piece of software, it is an enormous challenge to deliver Internet router software that works. Until a fourth company cracks this software barrier, the high-end router business will be the exclusive playground for Cisco, Nortel and Juniper, despite would-be competitors claims to superfast hardware. Hardware is the easy part.
