Alcatel to Build up China's First 16 - Channel DWDM Link for Shandong PTA

PR Newswire, Saturday, October 09, 1999 at 13:52

Alcatel at Telecom Geneva - Hall 4, Stand no. 210

GENEVA, Oct. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Alcatel has recently been awarded a
contract by Shandong PTA to build up a DWDM link from Jinan to Qingdao,
providing a transmission capacity of 16 channels at 2.5 Gbps on each fibre
pair. This has been confirmed as the first 16-channel DWDM link contract ever
signed in China.
"This contract has further confirmed Alcatel's long-term commitment to
introducing its latest technology to China's booming telecommunication
market," said Mr. Dominique de Boisseson, Chairman & CEO of Alcatel China Ltd.
"Alcatel is a world leader in the field of transmission, especially the WDM
technology. We're glad to share our market-leading technology with Chinese
customers and believe the technology will bring higher efficiency and
productivity to them."
Commenting on the signing of the contract, officials from Shangdong PTA
said the 470 kilometres DWDM link is expected to significantly increase the
voice/data transmission capacity between the two largest cities of the
province. It will also lay a sound foundation for Shandong PTA in its future
deployment of the latest telecommunication technology, they said.
Alcatel's market-leading saturation wavelength power control, out-of-band
forward error correction and software provisionable optical add-drop
technologies will be used in the project. The last two Alcatel technologies,
unique in the field, have been used in China for the first time. The
completion of the new link is scheduled for March or April next year.
Alcatel has been actively involving in many transmission projects owned by
China Telecom as well as local PTAs. In March, 1999, Alcatel completed and
activated a 420 kilometres, eight-channel WDM link for China Telecom,
connecting Chongqing and Chengdu.

NOTE: Alcatel WDM technology aims to ease network bottlenecks by
increasing the transmission capacity of fibre optic cables, in a simple and
cost-effective way. The idea behind WDM is to inject several channels of
information in the same optical fibre at the same time, each channel using a
different wavelength (or colour). The traffic is divided among several
channels circulating independently in the optical fibre, making it possible to
route different parts of the traffic in function of the network's specific
requirements.
With more than 1700 WDM systems installed worldwide, Alcatel claims a
leading position in the supply of optical networking systems to the major
national and international carriers.
Alcatel builds next generation networks, delivering integrated end-to-end
voice and data communications solutions to established and new carriers, as
well as enterprises and consumers worldwide. With 120,000 employees and sales
of EURO 21.3 billion ($25.0 billion), Alcatel operates in more than
130 countries.
Alcatel came to China in 1983. So far, it has established 21 joint and
wholly-owned ventures and has offered a full range of telecommunications and
cable products and services to China.

Alcatel Expands Optical Components Production Capacity By Launching 'Optronics 2000' Facility

PR Newswire, Saturday, October 09, 1999 at 13:54

Alcatel at Telecom Geneva - Hall 4, Stand no. 210

GENEVA, Oct. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- To comply with the millennium explosive
growth in demand for opto electronic components, Alcatel is reinforcing its
investments to further expand its optical component manufacturing capacity.
Alcatel announced today the doubling of the Alcatel optronics facility in
Nozay (Paris area, France) through its ambitious program called "Optronics
2000".
With its optronics activity, the pioneer in D-WDM laser sources and
optical amplification, Alcatel has earned a strong worldwide reputation during
the past years and positioned itself as a key leading optical component
supplier. Following its huge investment in 1994 by creating one of the most
modern and efficient plants to manufacture optoelectronics, Alcatel is now
reinforcing its answer to the marketplace demand by implementing a new step
for capacity expansion. The ever-increasing use of the Internet leads to a
tremendous increase in the need for high-capacity networks corresponding to
ever more optoelectronic component manufacturing.
"This investment will help us to provide the fast answer to our customers
demands on the exploding fiber optic communication networks market," says
Jean-Marie Vansteenkiste, President of the optronics business unit of Alcatel.
"The Optronics 2000 program will enable to multiply our manufacturing capacity
by a factor 6 and to enlarge in parallel our portfolio with leading-edge
opto-hybrids components integrating efficiently active and passive functions
required by the emerging optical systems. This new major step will
consolidate the worldwide product leadership of Alcatel in the field of
optoelectronic components."
The Optronics 2000 project is built around the doubling of the main
state-of-the-art facility of Alcatel in optoelectronics, bringing to more than
120,000 square feet (11,500 m squared) the increased manufacturing space to
found, assemble and test opto components. Once completed in summer 2000 and
after a global investment of USD 100 million (EUR 93 million), this
manufacturing facility will enable to create some 500 new jobs over a period
of three years.
A key feature of the program is the mass production escalation for the
existing InP product lines and the implementation of two new front-ends. One
for GaAs processing to address the 980 nm pump market, and the other one for
Si02/Si processing dedicated to the next generation of complex opto-hybrid
active and passive components. Assembly technology will benefit from
ultra-modern highly automated packaging process and testing equipment, opening
the way for a large supply capability and a strict high-quality on time
delivery.
This expansion will give to the optronics business unit of Alcatel one of
the widest leading-edge product offering on the marketplace for the next
millennium fiber-optic telecommunication networks evolution.

Alcatel Signs US$ 84m Contract With Pangea Ltd For Supply of Undersea DWDM Systems

PR Newswire, Saturday, October 09, 1999 at 14:09

Alcatel at Telecom Geneva - Hall 4, stand no. 210

GENEVA, Oct. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Pangea Ltd, a Bermuda-incorporated company,
has signed a contract initially worth US$ 84 million with Alcatel to provide
two submarine cables across the North Sea. Each cable will have an initial
capacity of 160 Gbit/s and will form part of a self-healing ring linking
London, Amsterdam, Dusseldorf, Hamburg and Copenhagen.
"Alcatel is pleased to have been selected as the sole supplier for the
submerged transmission network, said Jean Godeluck, COO of Alcatel Submarine
networks activities. Pangea's business plans meant that we had to deliver not
just market leading technology but a comprehensive service and a rapid time to
market. We were able to reinforce Pangea's success by providing the best that
is available in the industry and then being relied on to deliver it. This has
allowed Pangea to concentrate on delivering first class service to their own
customers."
Alcatel's unrivaled experience of supplying systems for the North Sea will
be used to engineer, supply, install and commission the links. The contract
for the sea cables and related transmission equipment has been let on a full
turnkey basis with Alcatel taking responsibility for all aspects of the
implementation including permits, route design, route survey, project
management, operation and maintenance training and link engineering. Marine
installation will be undertaken by Alcatel themselves using their in-house
expertise and dedicated resources.
The cable between Redcar in the UK and Maade in Denmark incorporates
Alcatel's 6 fibre pair repeater. This innovative undersea technology
increases the ultimate capacity of the cable by 50% compared to competitor
systems. This is combined with DWDM transmission technology, in which Alcatel
is the world leader, to provide the highest undersea capacity of any cable
deployed or announced. Each DWDM channel operates at 10 Gbit/s and each fibre
pair is capable of upgrade to 60 channels (or wavelengths).
The southern cable between Lowestoft (UK) and Amsterdam (The Netherlands)
utilises Alcatel's RAMAN pumps and optical amplifiers installed at each end of
the system to enable the 259km span to operate without the need of any
underwater amplification. Alcatel will equip the cable with its 1640 DWDM
terminal equipment operating at 10 Gbit/s per wavelength with an overall
capacity equal to the repeated section.
The initial capacity of 160 Gbit/s on both the northern and southern
cables will be incorporated into the ring during November 2000.

Alcatel Leads the World in Optical Transmission Solutions

PR Newswire, Saturday, October 09, 1999 at 14:17

Alcatel Investing US$ 180 Million in its Optical Business
to Meet Growing Customer Demand

Alcatel at Telecom Geneva - Hall 4, Stand no. 210

GENEVA, Oct. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Alcatel success in optical
transmission -- its integrated portfolio of terrestrial and undersea
networking solutions, plus advanced optical components -- continues to set the
pace in the global marketplace.
In September, Alcatel Chairman and CEO, Serge Tchuruk announced annual
sales of DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) equipment -- the most
advanced technology now being implemented in many of the world's operators'
backbone and metropolitan network infrastructures -- amounted to a
world-leading US$1.3 billion. Today, Alcatel announces that booming customer
demand globally is leading the company to invest US$ 180 million in its
optical businesses. The investments include:

-- Over US$80 million in two new cable ships for installing and burying
long-haul underwater telecommunications cables. The purchase is a
direct result of the rising demand for bandwidth created by the
Internet, new multimedia applications and high-bandwidth access
technologies such as ADSL (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line).

-- Further expansion of its optical component manufacturing capacity to
comply with the millennium explosive growth in demand for opto,
electronic components. Alcatel is doubling the Alcatel optronics
facility in Nozay (Paris area, France) through its ambitious program
called "Optronics 2000" at a cost of US$ 100 million.

Alcatel targets the world's operators demanding optical terabit core
network solutions. In today's highly volatile and competitive carrier
environment, operators no longer differentiate between terrestrial and
undersea parts of a network -- they simply want a fully resilient,
leading-edge, end-to-end communications network.

The only company in the world with both a terrestrial and undersea
capability in optical transport is Alcatel. Unlike competitors, it does not
have to partner with others to deliver an end-to-end, ocean-to-city network
solution. Therefore, Alcatel is alone in being able to deliver true
end-to-end global transmission networks, including any undersea link. In each
of these sectors, Alcatel has a global market lead, including 45% of the total
annual undersea transmission market by value.
Moreover, the systems are integrated by a single, common Network
Management System enabling, among other functions, efficient traffic control
and routing throughout all network levels.
Alcatel offers a uniform optical solution for each customer: a uniform
optical transmission network, uniform network management and common,
integrated technologies, whether terrestrial or undersea. It can pass on the
benefits of standard transmission components and software development, for
example, and ensure the highest standards of reliability -- even a common look
"n" feel among the network elements.
Christian Reinaudo, President of Alcatel Optics, explains: "Carrier
networks are evolving to address the dramatic growth in IP-based services and
Internet traffic, in line with the evolution of the Internet itself as a
strategic business tool. Alcatel's 'Instant Internet' solutions enable
carriers, enterprises and end-users alike to exploit the opportunities
emerging from the revolution in the way we live and work that the public
global Internet and its private counterparts, corporate intranets and to-end
optical channel, available from Alcatel's coherent, single-sourced,
own-developed optical solutions portfolio."
Within the ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) remit of
Europe alone, Alcatel has delivered 70,000 add/drop multiplexers, 850 digital
cross-connects, 500 optical network systems and 6,500 microwave SDH
(Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) transceivers; for the ANSI market, figures
include 17,500 SONET ADMs, 4,100 digital cross-connects and 1,200 optical
network systems.

At Telecom 99, Alcatel is also announcing:

-- A US$84 million initial contract from Pangea Ltd to deliver two
undersea cables across the North Sea, each with a capacity of
3.6 Tbit/s. The cables will form part of a self-healing ring linking
five European capital cities.

-- A Multi-million rand contract to supply DWDM and SDH equipment to
South Africa Telekom, enhancing Telekom's existing infrastructure as
part of a fully-managed solution.

-- Alcatel has recently been awarded a contract by Shandong PTA to build
up a DWDM link from Jinan to Qingdao, providing a transmission
capacity of 16 channels at 2.5 Gbps on each fibre pair. This has been
confirmed as the first 16-channel DWDM link contract ever signed in
China.
