NEW YORK (Reuters) - The number of rigs exploring for oil and natural gas in
the United States rose by 11 from last week to stand at 741 as of October 8,
oil services firm Baker Hughes Inc. said Friday.

The number of rigs drilling on land rose by 12 to 614, while rigs working
offshore fell by one to 113. The number of rigs active in inland waters was 14,
unchanged from last week.

The Gulf of Mexico rig count fell by one to 111.

The number of rigs searching for gas rose by two to 595, and the number of
rigs searching for oil rose by 10 to 141. There was one miscellaneous rig,
down one from last week.

There were 166 rigs exploring directionally, 42 exploring horizontally, and 533
exploring vertically.

In Canada, the number of working rigs fell by four from the previous week to
289.

The states with the largest change in their rig count were Texas, which gained
five, Oklahoma, which lost three, and New Mexico, which gained one.

The weekly rig count reflects the number of rigs exploring for oil and gas, not
those producing oil and gas.
