TDD/TDMA Capability of AB-Access Makes It Most Flexible

Solution In MMDS Band

Adaptive Broadband(TM) Corporation (Nasdaq:ADAP) announced today it has successfully demonstrated a working prototype of its AB-Access(TM) wireless data networking equipment for use in the regulated MMDS frequency band, between 2.5 and 2.7 GHz.

The prototype operates with both QPSK and 16 QAM modulation in a 6 MHz channel, providing data throughput of up to 16.7 Mbps. Production units will be available in the first quarter of 2000 that will support 64 QAM modulation and a throughput of 25 Mbps.

AB-Access is already being commercially used in the 5 GHz U-NII band. Carriers in Texas and Florida are deploying it in the last mile to deliver Internet access to business and residential subscribers at throughput rates of up to 25 Mbps.

"We project MMDS equipment will represent another significant portion of the $100 billion worldwide market for wireless data networking equipment deployed in the last mile," said Frederick D. Lawrence, Adaptive Broadband's chairman and chief executive officer. "Already, leading carriers such as Sprint and MCI Worldcom have acquired major holdings in the MMDS spectrum."

Another Milestone In Strategic Plan

Lawrence said an MMDS version of AB-Access marks another important milestone in the company's strategic plan. AB-Access was introduced earlier this year for ultra high speed Internet access. It bridges the last mile, replacing the local loop for business and residential subscribers. With its throughput rates -- which are more than 400 times faster than dial-up service with a 56K modem -- subscribers can use a single connection to simultaneously transmit voice, download full-streaming video, download data files, use real-time video conferencing and surf the Worldwide Web.

Line Of Sight Advantages

"MMDS is an attractive frequency to many carriers because of its wide coverage, good propagation characteristics and cost-effective technology," said Dr. Daniel Scharre, Adaptive Broadband's chief technology officer. "AB-Access products deployed in the MMDS spectrum will provide line-of-sight transmission at distances of up to 35 miles. And when deployed in networks using a picocell architecture, they will provide power levels strong enough to achieve first wall penetration."

Flexibility For Multiple Applications

Scharre also noted that AB-Access employs TDD/TDMA access technology, which provides tremendous flexibility for a variety of Internet applications. "Other wireless network equipment now being used in the MMDS frequency band are FDD systems, which allocate asymmetric fixed rates for upstream and downstream transmission," he said.

"Typically, the downstream transmission supports a much higher data rate than the upstream transmission. That may be appropriate for web browsing, but it won't easily accommodate applications such as video conferencing, which requires equal transmission rates in both directions. AB-Access has the flexibility to allocate bandwidth dynamically to the downstream and upstream transmissions, allowing it to effectively handle multiple applications. That makes it the most bandwidth-efficient choice for carriers as they continue to bundle services."

Flexible Platform

AB-Access also has a frequency-independent platform architecture, making it easily adaptable to various frequency bands between 2 and 42 GHz. Relatively little additional product development is required to commercialize products for specific frequency bands in use around the world, allowing the company to quickly respond to market opportunities.
