I know one of my uncles says (about himself) that he had a cushy billet. SO I did not see it as per se insulting. Though I am sure anything said snidely or nastily can end up being ridicule. My father sure wished he hadn't gone to the jungles- in the sense that 1. he wished he'd gone ot OTC like my uncles and 2. he wished there'd never been a war to go to. My husband and my brother in law enlisted and were both DAMNED glad they never got sent to Vietnam. There are no men in love with the glory of war in our family. They all think combat is awful, and none of them want to be in it- but they are all brave men and none of them would do anything dishonorable to avoid service.
