Tough puzzle. Sun's storage group OEM's Quantum's DLT tape drives. Quantum's tape tracking stock tanked today on a downgrade because some analyst thinks there's weak demand.

i will award a prize for the one who connects the dots

This says it all ...

"Equipment manufacturers have sold more than they expected and therefore they've placed more orders on the chip companies that they expected," said Rick Billing, an analyst with SG Cowen. "It didn't seem like holding inventory was a bad idea.
...
"Plus, there's all of this concern about the year 2000," he added. "Customers of any kind of component were of a mind to build some inventory. So if a company like Ascend decides its next quarter doesn't look as good and inventories are getting a little out of hand, they'll cancel some orders."
