What's to prevent Microsoft from subsuming the winframe server's function into the operating system? Well, to some extent, that's already happened. Gotta give a little history here. Citrix's original product, WinFrame, required a special version of NT 3.51 that had a multi-user OS kernal that had been developed by Citrix. WinFrame then added 'nice' features like the ability to print to a local printer even though the program was running on a remote server. Citrix and Microsoft got together and essentially split the product. [disclaimer, I'm working from memory here, so don't read too much into the terminology I use] Citrix ceded the multi-user kernal to Microsoft, which they used to implement NT 4.0 Terminal Server Edition. Citrix kept all the nice value added features that really make the environment usable and renamed the product MetaFrame. MS and Citrix work together very closely (I believe Citrix has programmers on site in Redmond). What protection does Citrix have that MS won't go for the rest of the functionality? Probably only whatever they signed in the agreement that turned over the kernal. You have to think it was pretty strong, or Citrix would have essentially been handing a gun to MS and asking them not to shoot.
