10/08/99 - QUANTUM 5/8 ATL: Quantum 5/8 ATL announces LANvault

OCT 8, 1999, M2 Communications - Disneyland, Paris -- Quantum 5/8 ATL, a leading supplier of intelligent DLTtape libraries for
networked computers, today announced the introduction of LANvault, an integrated solution for remote site backup that incorporates a
backup appliance, a central management console and a revolutionary customer service web portal. LANvault is targeted at Global 1000
corporations experiencing explosive growth of remote data, who are dependent upon this critical data residing outside the control of
central IS and who are finding that conventional data protection systems are complex and unreliable, requiring integration of multiple
components. LANvault represents a new category of appliance-based/centrally-managed data protection systems for the enterprise that
are dramatically easier to deploy, are easy-to-use, and, most importantly, that restore control of remote site backup to central IS.

Available immediately, list price for a single LANvault appliance comes in at under GBP 7,000. The saving of a typical LANvault data
protection solution for 100 remote sites, including system design, acquisition, deployment and administration is in the region of 40%
compared to server-attached integration projects incorporating multiple components.

The problem with remote site backup

Business dynamics in Global 1000 organisations are causing the explosive growth of remote data, which is considerably more difficult
to manage and protect. The amount of data at remote sites is typically doubling on an annual basis due to the proliferation of database
servers, E-mail servers and web servers at remote sites such as retail outlets, manufacturing plants, car dealerships and bank
branches.

Global 1000 organisations are dependent upon this critical data which most often resides outside the control of central IS...and they
want control back. They want control back because most of today"s remote site data protection systems are managed locally-which
means backup regimens are rarely observed.

IS organisations are finding conventional data protection systems are complex to design, acquire, deploy and administer. This is
because traditional backup systems require integration of multiple components including servers, NICs, SCSI cards, operating
systems, backup software, application specific backup agents, tape drives and tape libraries. To implement a data protection system
using multiple components, a team of highly skilled backup architects, administrators and technicians are required for research,
prototyping, integration and deployment. And once deployed, on-going administration is expensive because central management
requires the use of a disparate combination of internally developed and vendor supplied management tools.

Global 1000 IS organisations are calling for a new category of remote site data protection solutions that dramatically improve the
state-of-the-art and return control of remote site backup to the data center.

"The primary reason QUALCOMM is interested in LANvault is its ability to replace the complexities and intricacies of installing and
maintaining multiple backup servers," said Kevin Workman, Manager of High Performance Computing at QUALCOMM, the wireless
Technology Company. "We also look forward to obtaining the time savings created through LANvault"s central management software
and web service."

The LANvault solution

LANvault is an integrated solution for remote site backup that incorporates a backup appliance, a central management console and a
revolutionary customer service web portal.

The LANvault Backup Appliance goes from box to backup in minutes and consists of a high-performance DLTtape" library integrated
with a dedicated backup server that simply plugs into Ethernet. Each backup appliance is pre-loaded with either CA" ARCserve"IT" or
VERITAS" Backup Exec" industry- standard backup software.

The LANvault Central Management Console provides central command and control of remote sites via a web-based application that
runs on any NT workstation connected to the network. This enables a single administrator to remotely manage backup software, OS
and firmware of all LANvault appliances in the enterprise, dramatically streamlining administration.

The LANvault Customer Service Web Portal is maintained by Quantum 5/8 ATL for LANvault registration, configuration management
and communication. In effect, this portal "automates" remote site backup administration to slash management time. It provides
proactive email alerts to inform administrators exactly when and where updates/upgrades are needed for software, OS or firmware. The
Customer Service Web Portal also provides a convenient on-line source for backup resources/purchases.

"At eCommercial.com we employ a minimal and very specialised IT staff. This strategy dictates we implement only highly efficient
technology solutions," said Ed Roberts, VP of Network Services, eCommercial.com. "LANvault"s easy deployment, automated
administration and web-based support lets us focus on our core business."

LANvault compared to server-attached integration projects

LANvault is a quantum leap forward in remote site backup. The LANvault solution uses backup applications from leaders Computer
Associates International and VERITAS, industry-standard DLTtape" and mainstream technology like the Internet, email and browsers.
LANvault changes the "how" of backup -- not the "what" -- to deliver revolutionary benefits at every stage of the life cycle:

System design. Unlike server-attached solutions with multiple components, the IS staff evaluates a single appliance from a single
vendor. This reduces IS staff time.

Acquisition. Specifying and purchasing LANvault is much simpler than complex server-attached solutions. IS specs a single appliance.
Purchasing gets bids on a single SKU. Again, less staff time. And hard costs are much lower, too.

Deployment. Deploying server-attached solutions is costly, often requiring travel. Putting LANvault appliances into production is simple.
No integration is needed. Non-technical employees can plug the appliances into Ethernet with minimal phone support by the IS staff.
There"s no travel and no network downtime. Enterprise-wide deployment happens quickly and cost- effectively.

Administration. LANvault really outperforms server-attached solutions by "automating" administration. The Customer Service Web
Portal tracks the status of media, hardware, software, OS and firmware. When administrative action is required, the Customer Service
Web Portal sends intelligent email alerts to the administrator. It even provides links to the necessary resources. The administrator can
remotely execute all these tasks from one central location. This eliminates the need to travel for regular maintenance and service.
Further, LANvault appliances are closed environments, which eliminates conflicts/crashes common in general purpose servers. The
result is significantly less downtime and lower risk of data loss.

Saving Millions with LANvault

Considerable savings can be made across the enterprise not only in terms of acquisition but more so in the deployment and
maintenance. Visit www.atlp.com/LANvault/TCO for a detailed example and www.altp.com/LANvault/calc to use the LANvault
Interactive ROI Calculator to project specific cost savings for your organisation.
