Billions & Billions>

Sprint PCS sees the handwriting on the wall. Spokesman Tom Murphy says the carrier will spend $3 billion dollars through the end
of this year and into 2000 expanding its network. But Murphy says a national presence extends beyond network coverage.
"Internet companies are looking to carriers with national uniformity in how customers use the devices, in brand awareness and
advertising. It's similar to our marketing deal with RadioShack."

The bottom line, according to the Shosteck study, comes down to enabling Internet access. "Wireless carriers can make billions
and billions of dollars just enabling access through airtime and second phone lines, and leaving the content to the Internet portal
companies. They're not going to make money selling content when everybody offers the same thing," Zweig says. Her colleague
Rich Luhr, director of technology strategy, adds that "no one asked the users what they want. Carriers don't want to hear that
users don't want to pay for more than airtime."
