GTE/Ameritech -5: Companies'
Technologies Are Compatible

GTE said its wireless technology is compatible with Ameritech's code
division multiple access, or CDMA, technology, meaning the wireless unit
can offer digital services such voice mail and caller ID.

GTE also said the acquisition expands the area where it can offer both
wireless and wireline services.

Ameritech shares closed Friday at 68 1/4, up 1 3/4 or 2.6%, on composite
volume of 1.4 million shares on the New York Stock Exchange.

NYSE-listed shares of GTE closed at 76 3/8, up 3/4 or 1%, on volume of
2.5 million shares. Average volume is 1.8 million shares.
