It is the risk. I know when my husband signed up he knew he could be sent to combat. I admire policemen and firemen too. I have a high regard for anyone who wants to risk his or her life for others (or in the case of some wars- for the perception they are helping others- because even if the war is not one I would support I still admire the men and women in uniform.) Now that doesn't mean I would like all individuals in uniform, or respect THEM- but I respect the uniform. Just like I respect the Presidency but rarely the man IN the presidency, or that I respect the judiciary but not necessarily individual judges- etc. I respect some institutions more than others- and I could tell you why, but I am sure it is mostly a combination of my concept of honor, and what is worthwhile, and my family's values. I wouldn't want to argue about it- since I think it is just a personal set of values.
