During the time that the short interest was put on, the best bid on debentures was 1, or 1 cent on the dollar. The holder of debentures who wished to sell (tax loss?) was better off to short the stock. This would create a convertible hedge which would have no margin required. I personally bought bonds a while back for 10, which was like buying the stock for 16 cents, and shorted the stock the same day for 21 cents, locking in a profit and earning future interest on the debentures as gravy.

I am amazed that there's so little talk of trading the debs on this site.
