He began his entrepreneurial life in the United Kingdom in the early 1970s with borrowed funds. Today he is said to be richer than the Queen of England, thanks to the unending success of his Caparo group of companies. He heads the largest family-owned business in the UK and operates in five countries. In 1996, he became one of the few Indians to make it to Britain's House of Lords..... rediff.com ================================= Vimala Vasan ABU DHABI, October 5, 1999 LORD Swraj Paul, prominent non-resident Indian and Chairman of the UK-based Caparo group, has urged the Indian Government to treat NRIs on par with resident Indians to boost expatriate investment in major Indian projects. Lord Paul, who is in the UAE as an Ambassador for British business, told newspersons in Dubai that the collective economic output of 18 million-odd people of Indian origin living outside India is equal to the entire economy of India each year. He said that this extraordinary performance makes NRIs one of the most productive expatriate communities in the world. If NRIs are given the right incentives, India can expect a lot more investments coming in. Currently, nearly 80 per cent of foreign investments into India come from expatriate Indians, he pointed out. Lord Paul downplayed the political instability in India, saying that if a country can have a smooth transition of government when the ruling coalition lost by just one vote, there is certainly no political instability in India. Lord Paul said the UK's diplomacy had included a strong trade focus in the recent past. He addressed major Indian and British business groups in Dubai and visited free zones in the UAE. headlines.isyndicate.com rediff.com ========================Other CAPARO Group Companies Barton Aluminium Foundries: barton-aluminium.co.uk Barton Engineering: barton-engineering.co.uk Caparo Engineering Ltd.: caparo-engineering.co.uk Caparo Merchant Bar Plc: caparo-merchant-bar.co.uk Caparo Tubes Ltd.: caparo-tubes.co.uk Caparo Wire Co.
