From CBS MarketWatch:Earnings preview Analyst's insight into tech earnings By Janet Haney CBS MarketWatch Last Update: 11:31 AM ET Oct 8, 1999 Silicon Stocks Commentary SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Another earnings season is gearing up to hit Monday and investors are anxiously awaiting results from top technology companies. "We've got the burden of high expectations going into earnings season, that anything less than strong numbers will be viewed as a signal to take profits." Kurt King, Banc of America Securities The personal computer group -- with names like Compaq Computer, Sun Microsystems and IBM -- has experienced some volatility in the past few months. Will these companies and others be able to match Wall Street estimates? The Sept. 21 Taiwan earthquake hasn't helped matters much for tech stocks, with semiconductor makers taking the brunt of the hit. Hewlett-Packard said its revenue growth for the fourth quarter (the company reports on Nov. 17) will be lower than expected due to the quake and continued sales problems with its high-end Unix computers. Meanwhile, Apple also said it wouldn't meet analysts' numbers as a result of snags affecting its new Power Mac G4. Shedding some light on the earnings season was Kurt King, managing director, technology research, at Banc of America Securities in San Francisco. CBSMW: What?s your outlook for the hardware group as we head into earnings season? King: In general, I think the earnings season should go well. I think investors anticipate exactly that, in fact. The reality is that it's always going to be a mixed bag, because what will drive earnings results isn't so much how the industry's doing, but how well the individual companies are executing. It's predictable that companies like Sun, and Dell and Gateway who traditionally execute well, will play true form in the third quarter. Then again, you've got companies like Compaq and probably a few others where you don't know till you know.
