Corel's cutting edge
 Things didn't look so hot for Corel Corp. last winter when the company seemed to be desperately shedding divisions and technology in a bid to cut costs...
...When Corel dumped its NetWinder computer division in January in return for a 25% stake in a company with the boring name of Hardware Canada Computing, virtually no one called the move a stroke of brilliance, even though HCC was chalking up impressive sales figures.

But now that the company has been transformed into a hot commodity with the jazzy name of Rebel.com Inc., Corel's stake is beginning to take on more prominence.

With Rebel.com's upcoming initial public offering (IPO) of shares, expected early next year, Corel's initial $3-million stake in the company will in all likelihood grow quickly....

Rebel.com targets VARs, ISPs

Ottawa - For some companies, a change in name is also a change in attitude.
That is how the folks at Rebel.com see their new name, as the VAR stretches its borders to reach out to resellers and ISPs with its new network appliance aimed at the small- and midsize-business market...
....NetWinder is based on Linux and provides a full suite of Internet and intranet network services. It supports up to 100 users and allows for Internet access with a single Internet connection and one IP address.
Among other features, OfficeServer includes a firewall and allows for easy administration using a browser. The product has a starting price of $895.
Rebel.com views its product as an opportunity for VARs to provide small and midsize companies with a networked office for a low price.
"There are so many opportunities for VARs. Over the next 36 months, there will be millions of businesses seeking a simple, reliable networks solution, and we have it," Mansfield said...
