You are absolutely right in my case - I have taken out my original investment twice over. I got a pat on the back from L.T. for selling 6000 shares in summer of '98 and locking in some profit - at a price, split adjusted, of about 22. I'm not unhappy about doing that but in retrospect, given the tax consequences, I would have done better to hold DELL and sell calls on it. BTW that would be 24,000 shares today... over that 18 month period I could have picked up a fair amount of cash while the underlying more than doubled.
