Regarding wireless, one companies effort, Metricome.

Earlier a reference had been made to a wireless company called Metricome. They are out of, I think Los Gatos, Ca. I had their stock for about a year. They have a simple idea that is complex to establish but they have been making headway. They 'broadcast' on the 900mhz frequency, same as garage door openers. The range is short so they blanket their service area with small transievers they hang on poles, up to I think several miles if, say over open water. In cities, they hang their transmitters off utility poles.

An essential hang-up in their deployment has been getting approval of each utility in each municipality they enter, then the logistics of getting their crews established and installing.

They offer always on and reasonable rates. They are already in several major city hubs. Speeds were projected to 128kbs, not sure about current. Very reliable once connected because the transmitters are literally blanketing the local serviced area. Great for campus/large airport/etc.

I bailed due to the nausea from stock ride and slow roll out. I believe they also had Paul Allen as an investor. Some computer companies were even offering their modems with new notebooks. Their thrust for advertising was always on, always connected, anywhere. The reality is it is a bugger to set up the structure. They beat cellular because the transmission rate is as good or better then current dialup. Ever hook a cell line up to a computer? ssssslllllllooooooowwwwwwwww. They have a website at their name .com

I have not kept up with how they are doing now.
