Speaking of facts, Article...Six Billion People. So What? By Alan Caruba CNS Analysis 08 October, 1999 I will celebrate my 62nd year on this earth tomorrow and so will quite a few others, including many older than myself. The United Nations, environmental fearmongerers, and the supine press will make quite a fuss on Tuesday, October 12th, designating it the day on which the earth's population hits six billion, but that's just for public relations purposes. No one really knows how many people there are. The Greens, however, are very skilled at exploiting the fears of people while concealing their ultimate goal of eliminating as many people as possible from the earth they worship as the god "Gaia". You can bet the press will be filled with Green propaganda about this population milestone. We do know one thing, however. The man whom the press has long regarded as the great population guru, Stanford University's Paul Ehrlich, author of "The Population Bomb", has achieved a perfect record. He's been wrong on every prediction he made. None of the catastrophes he predicted occurred. Now, let's look at the facts. Many of those six billion folks, myself among them, are old. If you had been born in 1900, your chance of living beyond the average age of 43 at that time was slim. Now, the average life expectancy in the U.S. is 76 and climbing. Being of advanced age, many will begin to die. The population could be expected to decline, but because of liberal immigration policies, it's not likely to do that. The U.S. admits more new citizens than any other nation. Worldwide, however, the population can be expected to decline because birth rates are down everywhere. One reason for this is the rising standard of living around the world as global capitalism takes hold against the tide of despotism masquerading as socialism. The U.S. Census Bureau data shows that the 20-year decline in world population growth rate accelerated in 1997 and the first half of 1998. Of the 157 countries included, 17 had falling population rates a year ago. Now 30 nations have declining populations and l6 more have zero population growth. The world population growth rate in the 1980's was 2%. By 1992 it was 1.7%. By 1997, it was 1.4% and as of this year has dropped to 1.3%. In short, it is falling and doing so fairly dramatically. It takes two children to replace their parents. Less than that and the population shrinks. One reason this is occurring is more widespread, growing global prosperity. This is good news. It is also news decried by those who rant about "consumption" and the horrors of technology that has given us electricity, in-door plumbing, the internal combustion engine, and, yes, the Internet. Please spare me lamentations about poverty. Every form of despotism conspires to keep people poor, including environmental despotism. The above population information comes from Access to Energy, an excellent monthly newsletter written by Dr. Arthur Robinson. I recommend you visit its web site at accesstoenergy.com . The newsletter is widely read by scientists and others who, like myself, understand that the advances of mankind are under attack by those who would drag us back to a new Dark Ages of ignorance in order to enslave us. Another excellent source of information is overpopulation.com . Its Frequently Asked Questions page is invaluable.
