Re: So why haven't the idiots at AMD had motherboards manufactured directly.

AMD's resources are limited. And you aren't supposed to have to do the equivalent of hiring a private army to protect yourself from gangsters in our economy. That's why we are generally more successful as a society than, say, modern Russia where considerable resources must be directed to such activities. We have a more efficient economy (in most areas).

Intel is a near monopsonist (sole customer with market power) for many PC components. If they are permitted to use threats and intimidation to prevent the entry of other companies into this market, they can strengthen their monopoly position on those products that use motherboards, etc.

This is why I hope there is something other than what appears to be the only explanation for recent events.

But they may also be setting themselves up for one hell of a large verdict in a lawsuit. Damages could be a significant fraction of several years gross sales. The risk to Intel here isn't a government antitrust suit, it is a civil suit.

Re: "What is wrong with this picture. Why is this management so DUMB I ask you."

Intel longs have said it many times. Jerry Sanders is the best friend Intel has. Anyone else would be really dangerous. Why AMD shareholders don't realize this is a total mystery to me.

Kash,
What is wrong with this picture.

Why is this management so DUMB I ask you."...

It appears that...
1. AMD had too much faith in Taiwan mobomakers despite a prototype motherboard and a chipset.
2. AMD didn't want to step on the Taiwan motherboard makers toes.
3. For their altruistic motives they got screwed by the "cut coners",
chicken ship' Taiwan motherboard makers.

RE <<<So why haven't the idiots at AMD had motherboards manufactured directly.>>>

I can easily say that it was idiotic for anyone to have bought rmbs stock in the past year. There was clear cut evidence all along that there may be problems with the rmbus designs and with intc's support. My view can be supported by the roller coaster ride the stock has been on all year. I could say that a smart and sane investor would not have gone near it. That coupled with hindsight makes my statement a pretty good one. However it is one man's opinion and does not begin to cover all the facts involved in making such an investment decision.....just as we don't have all the facts as to why AMD didn't realize that they were going to have a mobo problem or why they didn't anticipate the pressures put on by intc. I remember your voice raised in condemnation when Raza quit in June but when all the facts came out, I think most would agree that Raza's leaving was not such a bad thing.

My point is is that we all mistakes seemingly: kash johal, intc, AMD etc...we don't know the circumstances that led up to those mistakes, meaning the mistake may not be a mistake, or there may have been no way to prevent the mistake, or may be the mistake resulted from someone taking a calculated risk that backfired. I have learned that is best not to condemn, until you have all the facts, and even then, only when it may do some good. Just a thought.

BTW I am the only one who does not make mistakes ;~).
