The RBOCS have a number of options in the DSL arena, including VDSL in FTTC/FTTH configurations. The twisted-pair guys are not without options ... the cable guys have options uptimestream as well.

These universe of these options is a valuespace in which BOTH cable and twisted-pair designs can exceed application demand for the forseeable future. IOW ... both cable and DSL provisioning can ramp faster than real demand ... technically. Into the 10-20 year future, there is plenty of technological room for cable, DSL, and wireless to turn innovation into profits.
