RE:"AMD has known that the taiwan MB/Chipset guys are flakes. It has
taken them forever to get the socket super 7 MBs up to quality - almost
2 years by my reckoning.

These idiots can spend $1.9Bn on a fab that will be sitting idle and yet
they can't spend $50Mn on a million MBs to get this product out right.

They have to step on the taiwan MB suppliers toes they have no choice.

Now they are in the ridicolous position of relying on VIA for its next
generation chip sets - and pretty soon VIA will be a major competitor in
the low end.

The design guys have done an awesome job, but this management just
plain sucks."...

Well, I have to agree...now after the fact. Last year we plastered it all over the BBs that AMD shouldn't rely on Taiwan for a chipset. AMD saw it too and made a chipset...even made a prototype mobo. Unfortunately this wasn't enough. Doesn't pay to rely on anyone else for the Chip, chipset, mobo launch. AMD is guilty of not controlling these things enough even though it seems they were. Live and learn I guess..

Your mention of $1.9B for Fab 30 brings a question to my mind. In the cc, Jerry, I think, said that when Fab 30 starts producing in Q2 2000, AMD will start deducting $25M per quarter for depreciation. This doesn't seem like "enough" depreciation to me. $100M per year would take 19 years to depreciate that FAB! Am I missing something?

Thanks, andy
