Which brings back to a fundemental question, if W-CDMA is going to be the dominant deployed base, will QCOM make ASIC's for this space?

I assume QCOM will support any 3-G CDMA standard that has enough market share to make it worthwhile. The standards specs will be open and published at some point.

Now in W-CDMA, just how much of QCOM IPR are really applicable?

I think management has come out and said that licensees pay a full royalty whether they use one patent or all.

The CDMA of W-CDMA is in the 2 Mbps fixed portion of 3G. Soft hand-off patent isn't useful in that regard and if it's "fixed" QCOM IPR's are mainly for mobile telephony.

It sounds like you think the air interface(s) for 3G mobile data will not be CDMA or am I misunderstanding what you are saying here?

The way I understand it is that most of the world (basically outside the US) has set aside spectrum for 3G use. Carriers will bid on the spectrum and build out an entire W-CDMA network in this spectrum. This network will be used for everything (voice/mobile data/fixed data). I look at this situation as analagous to the transition from analog to digital in the United States. Carriers will have a vested interest in moving their heaviest users from GSM/EDGE to W-CDMA. The CDMA network will have cost them billions....the quicker the transition the better for the carriers.

This is slightly sloppy thinking but I believe that it applicable in this case....If GSM/EDGE were anywhere near as efficient in data applications why would the carriers even build an additional CDMA network? It really doesnt make any sense....This leads me to conclude that EDGE may be able to handle 384kbps but it probably isnt doing it very efficiently. JMO.....
