Les, I remember a guy on the idea thread in 1997 that lost something like $200k in options in the october fall, he was blaming the broker, because he couldn't get in to get out in time -g- This is why i balk at the term manipulation, because in the end you have your mano a mano on your own account and have the power to enrich it or destroy it. Be the manipulator, not the arse end. Your examples are just anecdotal evidence of why extreme put/call ratios are contrary indicators, most option players are wrong at major market turns.
