Tuesday October 12, 8:12 am Eastern Time Company Press Release AboveNet's New York ISX Facility Now Open Redundant and High Capacity Power Sources Designed to Keep Facility Running Non-Stop SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 12, 1999--AboveNet Communications Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Metromedia Fiber Network, Inc. (Nasdaq:MFNX - news) and the architect of a global one-hop network that brings together high-bandwidth content sites, ISPs, and Application Service Providers in centralized co-location facilities, today announced the opening of its New York Internet Service Exchange (ISX) facility. Located in the Chelsea area -- the crossroads of New York City's financial and telecommunications districts -- this new facility will provide secure, fault-tolerant co-location services and superior Internet connectivity to businesses requiring fast, reliable Internet performance, including the large number of financial services firms and Fortune 500 companies in the New York area, as well as the fast growing number of Internet-centric companies sprouting up in New York's Silicon Alley. ``AboveNet's presence in New York demonstrates our recognition of the city's significance to the development of the Internet and its role as one of the largest Internet-access sites in the world,' said David Rand, AboveNet Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer. ``We will help companies in the New York area that want a strong presence on the Internet to better drive their growth by allowing them to focus more on their core competencies -- while we manage the infrastructure.' AboveNet built its new facility to meet the special needs of companies doing business in the New York area and to serve as a gateway for European companies wishing to conduct business in the U.S. The facility securely houses the servers that run companies' Web sites and it provides these companies with superior, round the clock, access to the Internet. According to Rand, ``These tasks are so technical and resource intensive that few companies can afford to do them effectively in-house.' Designed specifically for the New York metropolitan area, the facility has multiple sources of power and more than ample power capacity. These precautions help ensure that AboveNet can provide non-stop, fault-tolerant performance during power outages and ``brown-outs' and that it will have the power in-house to grow. ``Our New York facility is one of the most `powerful' data centers per square foot in the country,' continued Rand. ``Because it houses mission-critical equipment, it is designed to the highest levels of fault tolerance and redundancy, as well as ease of maintenance.' In addition, to meet the security concerns of e-commerce and financial services firms, AboveNet commissioned its partner, Netsentinel, Inc., a security services provider, to build specially designed cabinets that house the servers co-located in the New York facility. Access to the servers in these cabinets is gained through the use of a proximity card and a keyed-in personal identification number. The new facility is the third AboveNet ISX in the United States and will be connected by broadband fiber optic infrastructure, from Metromedia Fiber Network, to AboveNet's other East Coast ISX facility located in Vienna, Virginia. The Company's flagship ISX facility is located in San Jose, California, and its European ISX facilities are located in London, Frankfurt, and Vienna, Austria.
