John, Do you know whose chips would be in these Pace boxes? Shanghai Telecom Taps SGI for Broadband Multimedia Services Network Next-Generation Platform to Deliver Interactive Services MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. and GENEVA, Oct. 10 /PRNewswire/ -- SGI (NYSE: SGI - news) today announced that Shanghai Post & Telecommunication Administration (SPTA) has selected video serving and multimedia access technology from SGI, Oracle Corporation (NYSE: ORCL - news) and ViaGate Technologies for the Shanghai Online II broadband network. Based on a combined fiber/ATM topology, Shanghai Online II is expected to offer residential and business customers broadband multimedia services including high-speed Internet connections, voice services, video-on-demand (VOD) and interactive gaming. The project will help address the growing need for enhanced Internet services in the Shanghai metropolitan area and also will lay out the infrastructure for future communications development. ``A broadband network is ideal for these new services,' said Greg Estes, vice president of marketing for broadband and internet services, SGI. ``With scalable server technology, Shanghai Online can expand their services and capacity as their subscriber base grows.' A Look Behind The Scenes To alleviate the ``bottleneck effect' associated with high-bandwidth applications over the traditional Internet infrastructure, SPTA has deployed a fiber network throughout the Shanghai metropolitan area. SPTA is extending fiber both to the building and the neighborhood. The initial trial phase of the Shanghai Online II project involved 100 users who had access to MPEG-2 video content. ``VDSL technology is allowing SPTA users amazing download speeds -- up to 26 Mbps,' said Ted Hlibka, vice president, ViaGate Technologies. ``The ViaGate multimedia access platform is ideal for SPTA to serve the densely-populated Shanghai area and maximize their return on investment.' For the trial, SPTA specified SGI(TM) Origin(TM) 200 and Origin(TM) 2000 scalable servers, Oracle© Video Server v. 3.1 and ViaGate(TM) 3096 multimedia access switches. Video is delivered in MPEG-2 format using very high data rate subscriber line switches (VSDL). Users have the option to receive services via cable modem (high speed access) or set-top box. SPTA has selected settop boxes from Pace Micro Technology and StellarOne. Working with SPTA, Oracle and ViaGate, SGI professional services developed the VOD network architecture and design, integrated the Origin 2000 server with the broadband VDSL network and integrated the billing and customer management services. ``Our teams were able to design, build and deploy the system for testing in a very short time frame -- less than three months,' added Estes. The discussion in this news release about the broadband network contains forward-looking statements that involve risks and uncertainties, including the impact of competitive products and pricing, the efforts of third parties in developing, supporting, and promoting their products, and other risks detailed from time to time in SGI's SEC reports, including the report on form 10-Q for the quarter ended March 1999. SGI provides a broad range of high-performance computing and advanced graphics solutions that enable customers to understand and conquer their toughest computing problems.
