The masses are a mystery to me. In many things they demand variety and in many other things they demand uniformity.

When it comes to technology to me it seems that they gravitate to a single solution. Why do processors from Intel carry a premium price for example?

The "universality" effect may not really hit cable until the standards are such that a cable modem you buy in one place will very likely work in another place when you move. Right now the cable systems are too disjointed for that. DOCSIS where are you?

You are right in your basic comment though, people have forgotten that DSL is very real competition.
