Instead of specific stocks, I compared two indicies,
XAU (mostly hedged) and the HUI (AMEX Gold BUGS - unhedged )

moneycentral.msn.com

From the start of the HUI on 6/1/96 to the 8/28/98 gold bottom
they tracked each other very well, then the HUI lagged the XAU
until a few months ago, when unhedged stocks started to do better.

Here's the approximate changes for various timeframes;

XAU HUI
From 6/3/96 -45% -55%
Last 3 years -35% -45%
Last 12 months + 1% + 3%
last 3 months +23% +35%

I was wrong, the market has made a distinction, both ways -

It was favorable for hedged gold stocks from August 98 to August 99,
and has been better for unhedged shares since August 99.
