Mani:

Re: During the CC it was stated that break even point will approach $850 Mil for Q4 largely due the cost associated with the Athlon launch. It then will go LOWER for Q1 2000.

That leave me to believe that we are going to have a large advertisement blitz for the Athlon as we get closer to the holiday season. Does that make sense? Are we going to see an AMD add during the super bowl?

I'm not a CPA, but I believe advertising is expensed in the quarter it occurs, rather then when it is purchased. If this is true, and AMD has a Super Bowl ad blitz, then Q1 2000 could have unusually high marketing expenses.

Mani,

Everyone who follows this industry remembers the '1984' ad of Apple. it is a classic and likely will never be forgotten in terms of computer history.

Mani, <The add with the dude and the sledge hammer running down the aisle.>

Sorry to be nitpicky, but it was actually a dudette, i.e. a female athlete running with a sledge hammer. That's what I remember, at least.

Mani - Re: "Does any one remember the most famous and successful super ball add (according to some TV show) the Macintosh add in the late 80's. The add with the dude and the sledge hammer running down the aisle. Macintosh again the big bad blue. Hmmm :)"

It was the SuperBowl of January, 1984.

It launched the original Macintosh - a landmark machine.

It helped establish "Visual computing" and the Graphical User Interface - GUI as a standard.

It was aimed at depicting the EVILS of the IBM-led Computer establishment.

18 months later, Apple instituted MASSIVE layoffs and plant closings and FIRED THEIR founder, Steve Jobs.

Several more years later, Apple was hopping into bed with IBM to design/make PowerPC chips.
