<Within this community, I'm sure that it's much, much higher than 5%.> I would guess that you correct, for game writers it is crucial for use MMX/3D Now etc. Also for encryption/decryption writers and MPEG/Audio Codec writers. However, the number of people in these specialized fields is not large. In an earlier post, concerning the K7, Paul disavowed any value to compiler tweaked results when I speculated that the Athlon floating point performance may be tweaked from 20% to 50% by such optimization. Desparate for performance, some people even fall back to in-line, hand-tweaked assembler code for critical loops.
