Paul, Dell is too busy being worried about the Christmas quarter figures to care about that. They are probably practicing their grovelling prior to asking AMD for K7s in the near future. It is obvious that Dell will be more highly impacted than the others because they hav the best and most efficient production line, around 5-7 days worth of parts physically in the plant(there are of course off site queues of parts getting lined up at suppliers plants).
So when one of those off site caches has a miss.....they stop shipping and then they start to back up all those queus until this is rectified. They will have to pay extra for some parts and some will not be available at all for months.
IBM and Compaq indeed must change their model. They must abandon their distributors or die. This disintermediation has been ongoing now for years and IBM and Compaq have clung to the old model...the broken one, for far too long. This shows that there is a lot of ossified wood at the helm of IBM and Compaq(among many makers). Soon all the dealers will be gone, changed to support centers and convenience stores for stuff wanted right now. Generic cross brand support centers have emerged some time ago and will take more and more of the load for a share of the support $. SInce support must be paid for in the end, even Dell will end up charging for it at some point(first X hours free, then $Y per hour, from Dell/IBM/Compaq or $y-w from an independent). Independent as well as IBM/Dell/Compaq are looking for support people in Toronto along with the independents. Soon many franchised support corporations will be out there.
